Georges Quay Development

Cork City, Better Buildings Award, November 2008 – 3rd place

Construction Ireland, October 2008

Client Testimonial;

‘1 & 2 George’s Quay, Cork,  is an ambitious mixed-use City Centre quayside development involving the sympathetic restoration of a Protected Structure, a late 18th Century Georgian house and the development of a new 4-storey office and retail building immediately adjacent.

 Through a considered Conservation Strategy and detailed design, the Project Architect has carefully articulated a new office/retail building, with minimalist detailing, taking full advantage of the riverside views, which through its massing and use of innovative materials stands distinct from the traditional details of the adjacent three –storey Protected Structure which has been restored and re-used as an office building while retaining its many historical features. While creating very effective working spaces within both buildings, the Project Architect achieved a clear demarcation between old and new structures.

 The many restrictions of this finite City Centre corner site and the challenge of successfully articulating two very distinct building types  was overcome by the careful and diligent approach which was adopted by the Project Architect and the design team and the end result is an elegant addition to the quayside.’
